The Year of Melancholy

can you remember when you felt low?
how you just wanted to kill and be killed?
all your friends would not understand,
and they did not care to try.
do you recall their animosity?
the isolation smothered you,
and the only one who could relate
was the heartsick alcholic.
who was the one to hold you?
in a dream, the fantasy from fear,
’twas the honorable hero,
who ‘breviated the despair.
but do you remember the cause of low?
all you wanted was to love and be loved.
longing for the quintessence of purity,
and all you got was a year of melancholy.
